Hyde Charitable Trust secures £160K of additional benefits for tenants

The Hyde Group’s registered charity, Hyde Charitable Trust, has helped 437 of its residents living in Hampshire, East and West Sussex and Surrey to claim a total of £161,285 of additional benefits and grants they were entitled to over the past two years.

Help was given to residents whose wellbeing was being put at risk because they could not afford to heat their homes. The ‘Stay Warm and Claim What is Yours’ project began in March 2010 and will run until March 2013.

The project has been made possible thanks to £95,000 of funding from the ScottishPower Energy People Trust being provided over three years.

The Hyde Group’s Hyde Plus service is delivering the initiative which offers a range of support to residents, including help where people are struggling to make ends meet. As part of the project a dedicated Benefits and Fuel Advisor is able to give residents advice about efficient fuel management, help with money management, checks to make sure that all the benefits that a person is entitled to are being claimed and support to apply for energy efficiency grants.

Ann Loughrey, ScottishPower’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and The ScottishPower Energy People Trust’s Company Secretary, said:

“Funding provided by the ScottishPower Energy People Trust to Hyde Charitable Trust has already made an enormous difference to more than 400 people and we are delighted to have been able to help.

“It is a great accomplishment for an organisation to be given £95,000 over three years and turn that into a £161,285 benefit for people within the first two years. We look forward to seeing what more Hyde Plus’s work for The Hyde Charitable Trust will achieve in its third year of funding.

“We are pleased that the Trust’s work is helping to make a real difference for residents of The Hyde Group whose well being is affected by difficulties keeping warm during cold weather.”

Jahanara Hussain, Financial Inclusion Programme Manager from Hyde Plus, said:  “We’d like to thank ScottishPower Energy People Trust for its funding of our ‘Stay Warm and Claim What is Yours’ project.  The project has made a lasting difference to the wellbeing of hundreds of our residents who had been struggling to make ends meet. Now, they can keep warm throughout the year.

“Our project has already been very successful and we’ll continue to help more of our residents over the coming year.”

Hyde Plus’s Benefits and Fuel Advisor, Rachel Durrant, described one situation where a resident had had a stroke and was no longer able to work.   She said:

“Resident X was living off a reduced income and had spent their savings trying to keep up with all of their bills. Over time, the resident started to fall behind with their rent and utility bills as well as with payments for other items. We helped the resident to set up repayment arrangements for all of their debts, as well as helping them to find ways to make their money cover their basic living expenses. We were able to help the resident turn their life around.”
