The Somali Disability and Elderly Support Group project want to deliver support to Somali families in Birmingham to apply for all possible grants to improve the heating and insulation of the houses that their families live in. They will also advise them of ways in which they can buy energy more economically i.e. by moving away from Pre Gas and Electricity Paid Meters and Bottled Gas that offer poor value for money. The fact that most Somalis are new to living in a cold winter climate and living in a European style home means that they often have very limited knowledge of the need for home insulation and of ways to keep a house warm and dry. The project will therefore provide training and advice in their first language together with an extensive programme of home energy and insulation advice visits targeting families with young children as the first priority.
